Intense pulsed light (IPL) hair removal kits have become increasingly popular for at-home use. Using an IPL kit properly is key to getting the best and longest-lasting results. Not all IPL devices are created equal. Look for one from a reputable brand that has a high energy output. The higher the energy level, the more effective it will be at stopping hair regrowth. The large handheld wands tend to be more powerful than the smaller devices. Make sure the IPL kit is suitable for your skin tone most work best on lighter skin with dark coarse hairs.
Prepare your skin properly
IPL works by targeting the pigment in the hair follicles, so you want to avoid having any pigment on the surface of your skin. Exfoliate the area first to remove dead skin cells and ensure hair follicles are exposed. Shave the area completely smooth so that the IPL energy goes into the follicles and not the surface hair. The closer you shave to the skin, the better.
Refer to the instruction manual and start with the lower energy settings. For most devices, you adjust the intensity level. Begin with a small test patch and adjust up if needed. Use the skin tone and hair color settings recommended for you. Darker skin requires lower energy settings to avoid burns. Adjust as you go for your comfort level.
Stretch the skin
Stretching the skin tightly will allow the IPL to penetrate better into the hair follicles underneath. Pull the skin taut with one hand while gliding the IPL wand with the other. Having an assistant may help with hard-to-reach spots. Divide the area into sections and work methodically, covering every part of the skin. This prevents missing patches of hair regrowth. Work in rows or a grid pattern. Make test pulses first before fully applying the device. Glide it across the skin smoothly and evenly. Keep the IPL wand flat to the skin with gentle, consistent motion.
Do multiple treatments
Most people require 4-6 treatments spaced 3-4 weeks apart for optimal IPL hair removal results. Each session targets hairs that were in a different growth phase during the last treatment. Be diligent about doing a full set of treatments. Maintenance sessions may be needed periodically afterward as well. Hair that does regrow should be finer and lighter in color. Using a thin layer of conductive gel helps the IPL glide smoothly across the skin. Some devices have a built-in cooling head to lower the risk of burns and skin damage. Take care not to overheat the skin. Avoid using the same area for too long.
Moisturize afterwards
After treatment, clean the area and apply a soothing, oil-free moisturizer. This helps soothe any redness or irritation from the zapping sensations. Avoid irritants and sun exposure to the area for at least 48 hours. The IPL makes skin more sensitive temporarily. Exfoliating and moisturizing well between sessions will also aid results. Take proper safety precautions when using your IPL device. Follow all directions and wear the safety glasses provided. Never look directly at the light flash. See an electrologist first if unsure how to use the IPL safely.
