Proper nutrition is crucial for our health and well-being. In an ideal world, we can receive all the nutrients we need from what we eat. However, there are various reasons why not everyone can do so. For instance, people lack access to nutritious food or are too busy to cook healthily.

As such, many consume and benefit from dietary supplements like Thorne Research from Supplement First to meet daily nutritional needs. But what are supplements and how exactly do they work? Read on to find out!

    What are Food Supplements?

Also called dietary and nutritional supplements, food supplements would deliver nutrients to our bodies that we may not be able to consume in adequate amounts.

Food supplements from stores like Supplement First can be in the form of vitamins, minerals, fatty acids, and amino acids, among other kinds of substances. These supplements can be consumed in the form of capsules, pills, tablets, liquid form, and the like. Moreover, they come in various amounts and doses with different formulas.

That said, it’s important to note that our bodies only need a specific amount of each nutrient. Higher doses of certain nutrients aren’t always necessarily better. In fact, nutrients taken in higher doses can have negative effects to the point they can cause long-term harm.

This is why supplements must only be legally sold with the proper daily dose recommendation with a label warning not to go over the recommended dosage.

    Who Needs Food Supplements?

While supplements are extremely beneficial, it’s important to note that supplements aren’t a substitute for a healthy diet.

As much as possible, you must focus on getting a balanced diet filled with a lot of fruits, vegetables, whole grains, healthy fats, and proper protein.

That said, certain individuals require supplements, such as pregnant women, those on specific medications, children, seniors, or individuals with certain conditions that cause vitamin deficiencies despite a good diet.

Moreover, many people struggle to eat a healthy diet because of the modern lifestyle. People may be too busy to cook and consume healthy dishes, resulting in them skipping meals or purchasing fast food. Other people may have financial issues that restrict them from cooking and eating healthily, resorting to consuming more affordable yet unhealthy fast food.

It’s best to check with your doctor before taking any supplements so you know what vitamins you are deficient in. Your doctor will recommend supplements and a diet plan you need based on your blood test results.

    How Do Supplements Work?

The ways supplements work will depend on the type of vitamin you’re taking. Every vitamin would have a different job, though they all work as a team to regulate our body’s biological processes.

Water-soluble vitamins are absorbed by our intestines and then carried by the blood to body tissues. Fat-soluble vitamins take time to break down and will remain in our bodies, usually stored in the body fat or liver.
